A COMPANY supplying blinds is leaving its rivals in the shade with its latest product.
Lockwood-based Swift Blinds has stacked up orders and enquiries for its Shadeshield solar control film blinds following its appearance at the British Blind and Shutter Association’s Showcase 2008 held at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry.
The transparent film is proving popular for offices because, when fitted to windows, it can reduce glare from the sun and reflects solar heat away from the building – helping keep staff cool during the summer while giving them a clear view of the outside world.
The film also blocks 95% of UV radiation – making it ideal for protecting window displays.
Swift director David Roebuck said: “We are one of very few companies in the country to manufacture this product. It reflects a high percentage of glare and solar heat and plays a part in helping businesses reduce CO2 emissions.”
Swift was one of the leading companies among more than 50 exhibitors at the Showcase 2008 event. The company’s joint managing director Chris Swift is this year’s president of industry body the British Blind and Shutter Association.
Said Mr Roebuck: “The show was busier than we expected. We are now in the process of following up trade leads from the event

Fidelity Deposit and Discount Bank (Fidelity), headquartered in Dunmore, has had a Green Ridge (Scranton) branch for several years, but it was little noticed until May of last year. That’s when a new, revamped Green Ridge branch opened, built around Fidelity’s “dialogue banking” concept.
Dan Santaniello, executive vice president and chief operating officer, says that when the new branch opened, new accounts soared.
The Green Ridge branch interior was designed specifically to communicate Fidelity’s desire to draw the customer in and to establish a conversation.
“The trend has been to drive the customer away,” Santaniello says. “Banks were doing everything they could to keep the customer out – some were even green construction los angeles charging fees to use a teller. We wanted to be different – we want the customer to come in, spend time.”
At the Green Ridge branch, there are no teller stations. The interior is open and airy, with a concierge desk in front, flanked by an “Internet cafe ‘” customers are welcome to surf. Take the word cafe literally – there is a seating area where the cookies and coffee are free for the taking. The coffee-and-cookies area also has a television and toys.
To the rear of the airy space are what may be perceived as teller stations. But Santaniello says they are anything but. “There is no employee here below the level of a customer service representative,” he says. “There are no tellers.”
The bankers are prepared to answer any question and perform most services a customer may desire. The computer screens turn easily so banker and customer can view account information together. As Santaniello says, the emphasis is on having a conversation.
The success of the Green Ridge branch emboldened the management team at Fidelity to aim for something even more dramatic with the bank’s new West Scranton location, opening this month.
Architect, Michele Dempsey, AIA, president of DxDempsey in Scranton designed the West Scranton branch. “Fidelity’s (other buildings) aren’t as innovative as their process,” she says, referring to dialogue banking. “Every decision (about the West Side branch) was made around being a partner with the community.”
Dempsey says green building is “in my DNA,” so designing an environmentally friendly office was her top priority

Holiday cards and Christmas cards retailer Cardstore.com
has made the switch to 100% post-consumer waste paper.
“Green is one of our favorite colors,” says Cardstore.com’s Marketing
Director Tiffany Chan. “We’ve worked hard to ensure our photo cards are not only
stylish, but also eco-conscious.”
This switch adds to Cardstore.com’s already strong commitment to the
environment since the company has already been using eco-friendly digital
printing, maintaining Forestry Stewardship Council (FSC) certified printing
facilities and partnering with Carbonfund.org to offset their carbon
footprint.
“It’s important to us that we do our part to protect the environment and
make sure we minimize our impact to the earth in as many ways as possible,”
says Cardstore.com CEO Marty Reed.
A lot of recycled paper is pre-consumer, meaning it was never actually used
and was simply reprocessed in the factory. In contrast, post-consumer waste
paper was used beforehand, kept out of a landfill and brought back to life
to be used again. This distinction is important because using post-consumer
waste paper reduces waste and carbon emissions, ultimately saving trees.
This is why Cardstore.com switched to Mohawk paper, which is made up of
100% post-consumer waste paper, processed chlorine free and Green Seal
Certified(1). This paper is also manufactured entirely with wind-generated
electricity.
Waste reduction fits right in with Cardstore.com’s business model. By its
very nature, the print-on-demand process is responsible production:
Cardstore.com makes what it sells, nothing more. Pre-manufactured greeting
cards can be overproduced, resulting in a large portion of unsold cards
ending up in landfills. With digital printing, waste is minimal.
Cardstore.com also works to minimize the use of hazardous chemicals
associated with printing ink. Conventional offset printing methods create
“plate waste” and harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), but
Cardstore.com’s modern digital presses reduce VOCs. In addition,
Cardstore.com ensures that its printing facilities maintain FSC
certification. The FSC’s standards represent the world’s strongest system
for sustainable resource management and economic, social and environmental
concerns.
Rounding out their go-green initiative, Cardstore.com has made a donation
to Carbonfund.org

Holistic Dermatologist
Dandruff is a reaction to Malassezia [furfur], a yeast that lives on the hair follicles. The condition can be aggravated by an overgrowth of yeast in the intestines or an insufficient amount of essential fatty acids in the diet. You can treat the flakes by killing the yeast with an antidandruff shampoo. Formulas that contain zinc work, as does Loprox, an antifungal, prescription-only shampoo. I also recommend eating more yogurt or probiotics and increasing your consumption of healthy oils, like fish oil. Remedies used for treating yeast infections can also help combat dandruff; ask your doctor about herbs like artemisia and grapefruit seed extract that have antifungal properties.

However, Australian gambling websites, Lasseters Online Casino and Global Approach, are legally prevented from having Australian players. Players have to prove their identity offline, and satellite technology is able to detect the physical location of players. An independent international regulatory body, e-Commerce & Online Gaming Regulation & Assurance (eCOGRA) oversees the monitoring of security and privacy issues associated with online gambling.
